This publication focuses on two bodies of work by Al Taylor,Pass the Peas and Can Studys. Although distinctly individual, both of theseseries examine Taylor's ongoing explorations of the circle. Instigated bycuriosity, the artist studies the inside and outside of circular shapes andinvestigates their multi-dimensional possibilities. Taylor playfully exploresthese permutations in his Pass the Peas series from 1991-92. In addition tocompleting an array of drawings, he used tubular materials such as hula-hoops,garden hose, and plastic-coated cable to create three-dimensional spirals andcoils, interlocking loops, and dissected circles that were mounted on the wall,left freestanding, or hung by wires from the ceiling to activate changingperspectives. The artist's investigations into the infinite possibilities of acircle were further pursued during 1993 in his Can Studys series, when heexpanded his "research" by exploring the play of light that wouldtheoretically be reflected off of the exterior--or projected out of theinterior of cylindrical forms.

Al Taylor, who died in 1999 at the age of 51, was inspired by literally whatever was around--from a dog stain on a Paris street to a Styrofoam float washed up on a Hawaiian beach. He saw abstract forms in quotidian detritus, creating a complex and humorous body of work consisting of paintings, drawings and sculpture, which he called "constructions." His use of simple materials like hot rolled steel, wire, Xerox toner and correction fluid was a perfect match for such subject matter. Approaching this three-dimensional work with the same balance of intensity and whimsy with which he made his drawings, Taylor willfully dismissed any distinction between the two media. In fact, he thought of his constructions as spatial drawings with a multitude of views. This fully illustrated monograph, which includes an extensive overview of Taylor's oeuvre, is published concurrently with an exhibition at Zwirner & Wirth, New York.
